Examinations Chief Anura Edirisinghe yesterday said that of 199,000 GCE (Advanced Level) candidates, 126,000 had passed the examination. He said the success rate was 63 per cent.
The Examination Department yesterday released the results of the A/L examination held in August 2009.
M. Sivapathasundaram (Saiva Mangaiyar College, Colombo 6) with an average Z Score of 2.9388) came first in Bio science stream and Nipuna Randunu Samarasekara (Ananda College, Colombo with an average Z-Score of 3.3439) topped the list in the Maths stream.
Y. Pasindu Namal Jayawardane (Rahula College) ranked first in the Arts stream with an average Z-Score of 2.5705), while Pasan Malinda Katipearachchi (Mahinda College) with an average Z-Score of 2.8354) secured the topmost position in Commerce stream.
Students who are among top three in each stream are as follows.
Arts stream: S. Mihiri Hirudini, CS/Sirimavo Bandaranaike College, Colombo (2.5507). Chamila Sampathmali Karunaratne K/ Pushpadana Balika Maha Vidyalaya Kandy (2.5198).

Commerce stream: M.M. Lanka Hansanie, G/Sangamitta Balika Maha Vidyalaya, Galle (2.7402). G.K.U. Malsha Madhusghanika, KG/Nagagiri Maha Vidyalaya, Hemmathagama (2.6967).
